Looks like a Land Rover’s own 300TDi unit.

Nicer and more refined than the 200TDi unit.

It’s a great idea, just would require a bit of work. Engine mounts need to be moved in addition to the transmission mounts (and a chunk taken out of the cross member under the trans to make space for the prop shaft otherwise it fouls). You’ll need a stumpy bellhousing for the R380 box otherwise there isn’t enough room in the engine bay for the 300Tdi and you’d have to ruin the look of the IIa by moving the radiator forward.

That being said, once done you’ll have a little rocket ship that pulls like a train because the 300tdi is huge improvement over that 2.25 in there.

Edit: wait, fuck that’s a Series II not a Series IIa. You can tell by the valieance under the grill. On a IIa it’s rounded where as a II it’s just straight.

I was waiting for you to weigh in on this.

But for an upfront total of $11.5k?!?

A 88" with a 300Tdi in good nic is probably going to run you around $15k so you wouldn’t make any money on it and you wouldn’t loose a lot either.

The one thing that everyone forgets when they re-power a Series Land Rover is the brakes and the steering. Even Land Rover so some extent forgot this when they made the Series 3 Stage 1.

Truthfully, it’s a bad idea. But that wouldn’t necessarily prevent it from happening...

That little pick-up has actually been floating around on the local El Listo de Craig for a few years now - the owner periodically takes the ad down, and then puts it back up. He’s never changed the price. That TDi motor, though, that’s new.

There were a few cars that had been on the local equivalent of CL for literally years, as they slowly came into favour in the market they disappeared, all except this one.

I regularly check in on it. There is a big part of me that would buy it tomorrow, just for its 80's-ness and its French-ness (when is the last time the French built proper sports cars?), despite the fact that PRV V6 is errrm, compromised in terms of design. Plus the fact that Alpines were VERY highly regarded as driver’s cars in the UK press at the time, at least as good as a 911. Now 1/5th of the price.

Why don’t I buy it? it’s been for sale as long as I can remember. Eventually the market will wake up to it, and it will be gone. Then I’ll think I should of bought it...

Swap in a set of Disco 1 axles and bolt a LC power steering box to the outside of the chassis and voila upgraded.

True...but so many punters haven’t done this! I investigated doing it back in 1996 on the Stage 1 but Disco or even Classic RR axles were thin on the ground and pricey to boot in Oz at the time. And then I bought a Defender anyway...
